Do you know how many calories are in a glass of orange juice?
As the world becomes increasingly health-conscious, the public is looking for healthy alternatives to fizzy and sugar-laden drinks. The problem is, do we really know what we’re drinking? When consuming mass-produced goods seemingly portrayed as the ‘healthy option’, when you look at the actual figures behind them, they’re not quite as healthy as we might have originally thought.
Take orange juice for example, with up to 120 kcal in a 250ml glass of freshly squeezed orange juice, drinking it regularly can certainly add up. We take a look at the stats, and how Overhang does it differently.
In 100ml of orange juice, there is around 9g sugar, over a third of what an average woman should consume in a day. Our recipe has just over half the amount of sugar included at only 4.9g, allowing you to enjoy it without fear of going over the recommended limit.
Some scientists believe that eating excessive fructose could actually amplify hunger, rather than curb it, leading to cravings later on in the day. Usually, the amount of fibre in the fruit would counteract the fructose meaning it could absorb more slowly, but as the insoluble fibre is mostly lost in the juicing process, our bodies take a direct hit. Consequentially, drinking a glass of orange juice doesn’t have the same satiating benefits of consuming the equivalent in whole oranges.
