IS DETOXIFICATION A MYTH?

Detox. It’s been the word on the tip of health-nut tongues for years now, and for good reason. It implies a restoration of your body’s needs, promoting feeling better from the inside, out. However, as much as this sounds like a fantastic and almost necessary process to indulge yourself in every so often, is there any truth in the meaning of detoxing?

Is detoxification a myth?

According to The Guardian: “There’s no such thing as ‘detoxing’. In medical terms, it’s nonsense.”.

While a newspaper’s word isn’t gospel, it’s important to recognise your own body’s natural detoxing capabilities. Everyone knows that drinking more water is a great start, as well as obtaining as balanced a diet as possible. Regular exercise, good sleep and maybe even a little yoga can go a long way to help the body perform exactly as intended instead of a sluggish diesel-version of your electric former self.

So, is detoxification a myth then? We believe ‘detoxing’ as a term, is widely used as marketing fluff. Your body does a good job to remove toxins anyway. That is the natural function of your kidneys and liver already. However, these vital organs do every now and again need assistance, which is why we believe sometimes a bit of a boost is needed.

Help your body along

Your body may be a temple of natural cleansing power, but there are some essential vitamins and minerals to help it along that you won’t get from just a bit of broccoli.

Consider ingredients that may not be a typical part of your diet: milk thistle, ginger and burdock root, for example. Milk thistle is known for protecting your liver against toxin excess,(according to healthline.com) amongst other fantastic health benefits. Ginger is famed for settling the stomach and acting as a natural anti-inflammatory, popularised in herbal tea. Burdock root is an all-round antioxidant powerhouse.
